La Bella Couture of Donatella Versace

Shortly after the initial shock back in July 1997 due to  gruesomeness and somewhat mysterious death of Gianni Versace to the hands of a supposedly disgruntled lover;  it was not clear if his younger sister Donatella would be up to the task of propelling the Fashion house he had created forward.

Gianni after all had been one of those larger than life figures in the world of fashion, His lifestyle along with his somewhat nouveau baroque aesthetics had put the Bling back into  Fashion defining the 80′s like no other designer had.

Sunday evening’s show at the Ritz Paris, site of so many of Gianni Versace’s couture triumphs, the scepter was once and for all passed on. I think If Gianni had been looking on he would have done so with a smile on his face.

“Sciolto” which in Italian means loose in a good way,  an effortless sort of chic is the first thing that comes to mind. Finally after 15 years from Gianni’s untimely departure Donatella had managed to capture the magic that had made Versace the front-runner when it comes to glam, with an ease and a genuine abandon that was purely delightful.

True Versace is not for everyone. People tend to parody the label saying that is appropriate only for the Russian oligarchs and their mistresses.

It is even said that during a meeting back in the 80′s between Gianni Versace and Giorgio Armani. Gianni remarked; -you Giorgio dress the ladies: “le signore.”  -I dress the mistresses:  ”le battone”…

regardless on Sunday the mistresses looked ever more so ladylike in their Versace gowns.

Sexy, elegant and sciolte…like never before…

Some say it was technically due to a certain construction or deconstruction of the creations and so on and on….blah, blah , blah. In fashion and especially in couture, it is all about a feeling a certain spirit that inhabits the pieces, it is the infused heart and soul of a group of dedicated craft people that translates in sheer delight or utter disgust expensive at that…these my dear friends was sheer delight a la Donatella Versace…this was La Bella couture.
