Winning the race…yours that is.
The London Olympics are around the corner. The World is beating a path to London. It seems the city has had a resurgence lately. Just last week we witnessed the diamond jubilee and the throngs of people showing en mass their devotion, fascination and adoration for everything royal.
The Queen as the it woman of the moment: 85 and unflappable. She along with the rest of the royal family have taken the mere act of being there into new heights, encoding a whole new language that spells continuity and normality in times of volatile financial instability and political discourse.
Fashion on the other hand a barometer for little these last few seasons other then the stanchness from part of most designers to avoid reality by eschewing the practical and embracing the whimsical and mundane as if clothes no longer function as sheltering elements but rather as an indulgent new representations of a pseudo art form that grows more into an acronym for our times as opposed to a reflection of society, are being eclipsed by new companies embracing the redemptive qualities of a social conscientious products that functions in harmony with the shifting times.
A midst all this stands a diminishing buying public with a dwindling disposable income and an even fainter reason to spend…
Companies both on the retail and manufacturing side of the equation, as well as the Mega brands that tend to bathe themselves in the flickering blue light of self promotion, spend money like investment banking enterprises on derivatives, in the futile exercise of letting us know that there are so many people out there just clamouring to part with tens of thousands of dollars for their less than relevant and exciting products, to the extent of a beautiful pair of shoes and a finely crafted hand bag can get you excited, knowing full well that tomorrow your Euro may not be worth ten Drachmas….
What to do other that dress for the race…or enter a marathon or help out and erect a new tent city on the outskirts of Scarsdale… Just be yourself grab a t shirt and a skirt wear it with a hat and a scarf go back to making your own. Maybe dress as if every day is an Olympic event because they way things are everyday you survived is a race you won…
